Fishing — Bait, Chum, and Catches
Rod progression, bait recipes, chum bonuses, and how fishing feeds deliveries and cooking.
Fishing adds a parallel gather loop: craft bait, cast at wharves, catch species by location, and turn fish into deliveries, XP meals, and chapter tasks. It looks optional early; mid-game orders frequently assume you can supply fillets and rare catches.
Unlocking the wharf
Progress through expansions and quests until the wharf and rod become available. Keep Fishing Rods restocked at the Workbench (Shop stock) and enough bait ingredients before marathon sessions.
Manager's Fishing info lists fish by location, bait requirements, and odds where data exists. Keep it open beside the game client.
Bait crafting loop
Bait is consumed each cast. Recipes pull crops, bugs, honey, and crafted goods. Typical flow:
- Check today's bait recipe cost vs your farm output.
- Craft bait in batches sized to your play window.
- Fish at the location matching your delivery or quest target.
- Restock ingredients before bait hits zero mid-session.
Delivery alignment: Before crafting exotic bait, search Deliveries info for fish orders paying coins or tickets — marginal profit beats random casting.
Chum and bonus catches
Chum (and related boosts) skew catch tables toward rarer fish or event species. Use chum when:
- A quest explicitly asks for a rare fish (Quests info)
- Chapter tasks multiply fishing points (Chapter race)
- You have surplus chum ingredients cheaper than P2P fish buys (P2P calc)
Do not burn chum on generic commons you already stock for cooking.
Rod and skill upgrades
Rod tiers and fishing skills (Skills guide) reduce waste and improve effective catches per bait. If bait feels expensive, invest in skills or wearables before buying fish on Trade every day.
Simulate fishing-adjacent skills in Skill trainer when respecing a hybrid delivery build.
Fish as kitchen input
Many kitchen recipes use fish for strong XP or delivery items (Cooking XP). Plan a fish → cook → feed or deliver pipeline:
| Stage | Bottleneck watch |
|---|---|
| Bait | Crop and bug caps |
| Catch | Location and time |
| Cook | Kitchen tier and oil |
| Consume | Bumpkin level vs delivery profit |
Weather and seasons
Some fish or bite rates shift with seasonal weather (Seasons calendar). When an event boosts coastal activity, pre-craft bait and clear delivery slots so catches become tickets instead of warehouse clutter.
Marketplace caution
Rare fish and bait ingredients trade on P2P for FLOWER. Compare listing fees and net received using Marketplace guide before flipping catches you might need tomorrow for an NPC order.
Daily fishing habit (15 minutes)
- Scan deliveries for fish SKUs.
- Craft one bait batch per required location.
- Cast until order quantity met or bait depletes.
- Cook or list surplus before logging off.
Inspect peer farms on home to see how top players balance bait stock — useful when you are unsure how much to pre-craft.
Location choice without guesswork
Each wharf ties to a location table. Casting in the wrong zone burns bait with no quest progress. Workflow:
- Read the order on Deliveries info or the quest text on Quests info.
- Match species to location on Fishing info.
- Craft location-specific bait if required — generic stacks may not apply.
- Stop when the count hits zero; cook or sell surplus fish so bait/rod loops stay clear.
When to stop fishing for the day
If bait cost exceeds delivery profit at current P2P prices, pivot back to crop farming or cooking (Cooking XP). Fishing is only "free" when ingredients were already surplus.
